In an attempt to ease the financial burden on citizens, particularly those with low incomes, the Lagos State Government has stated that it is pursuing the implementation of monthly and quarterly rent payment choices.
This was revealed by Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, the state commissioner for housing, on Tuesday during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing, which commemorated Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second year in office.
According to Akinderu-Fatai, the proposed legislation is an extension of the state’s efforts to lower housing costs and increase accessibility.
He brought up the government’s previous rent-to-own program, which enables recipients to make a five percent down payment and spread the remaining amount over ten years.
That program was warmly accepted, and its accomplishments inspired us to look for fresh approaches to lessen the burden of annual rent payments,” he said.
He pointed out that the new approach should help those who struggle to pay their rent each year.
We believe that monthly or quarterly payment options will give people more breathing space and reduce the stress associated with sourcing lump sums,” he added.
Before launching the program, he continued, the government is now working with developers, landlords, and other interested parties to address any possible issues with payment methods and enforcement.
Of course, there are problems to be solved, such as enforcement, payment tracking, and landlord participation. However, he stated, “discussions are ongoing, and we are listening to all sides.”
He disclosed that certain regions of the state are slated to undergo a pilot phase.
“This is more than just a written policy. We are actually moving forward. We are committed to making it happen because we understand what this means to many families,” he said.
